The Mind Sensei Podcast — Part A: The Kenpo Journey with Mr. Jason Arnold
Welcome to another powerful episode of The Mind Sensei Podcast! In this two-part special, host Peter Tas sits down with Mr. Jason Arnold, an accomplished martial artist and respected teacher from Canada whose dedication to Ed Parker’s American Kenpo has inspired countless students around the world.
In Part A, we explore Mr. Arnold’s lifelong passion for the martial arts — from his early training days to becoming a 7th Degree Black Belt and Senior Professor under the Kenpo International banner. Mr. Arnold opens up about how he found his path in Ed Parker’s American Kenpo Karate, and how that foundation has evolved to include Modern Arnis, Filipino stick work, and even Jeet Kune Do — Bruce Lee’s dynamic martial art.
You’ll hear how Mr. Arnold built Kenpo Karate Canada, balancing the traditions of Kenpo with modern training methods and real-world self-defence applications. He shares stories about the many students he’s mentored — from beginners to advanced practitioners — and the importance of keeping Kenpo alive and growing through seminars, private lessons, and international events.
More than just techniques and ranks, this conversation dives into the mindset that keeps a martial artist motivated for over 30 years, and the values that shape a true Kenpo instructor: discipline, adaptability, and a genuine love for sharing knowledge.
Whether you’re a lifelong martial artist, a student of Kenpo Karate, or simply curious about the deeper philosophies behind the arts, this episode will give you valuable insights and timeless wisdom straight from one of the best.

Welcome to the Mind Sensei Podcast! I’m your host, Peter Tas, and today we have the incredible honor of speaking with a true warrior and scholar in the world of martial arts — Mr. Bryan Hawkins.
Mr Hawkins journey in Kenpo Karate began over forty years ago, back in 1980, at the iconic West Los Angeles Studio.
He was a private student of the legendary Senior Grandmaster Edmund K. Parker, the founder of American Kenpo Karate. From 1987 until Mr. Parker’s untimely passing in 1990, Mr Hawkins managed the West LA school, carrying forward a legacy that few have had the privilege to inherit directly.
Because of this unique and deeply personal connection, Mr Hawkins is known as one of the authorities on American Kenpo Karate today. His expertise even extended to Hollywood, where he served as a Kenpo technical advisor alongside Ed Parker on the film The Perfect Weapon, and has since contributed to numerous television and film projects.
Mr Hawkins is a visionary leader that owns and operates multiple Bryan Hawkins Kenpo Karate studios across California and serves as President of United Kenpo Systems, an organization with affiliates around the globe.
As the Founding Senior Master Mr Ed Parker once said, “My name on that sign is what brings people in, but Bryan’s name is what keeps them here.” Bryan Hawkins has been a vital torchbearer for Kenpo’s spirit and community, especially in West Los Angeles, a place rich with Kenpo history.
Today, we dive deep into Mr Hawkins remarkable journey, his insights on martial arts, and the enduring legacy of Kenpo Karate.
Welcome to The Mind Sensei Podcast — Part 1 of our exclusive 3-part interview with Mr. Bryan Hawkins, Master Instructor and founder of Bryan Hawkins Kenpo Karate in Los Angeles.
With nearly 50 years of experience, Mr. Hawkins trained privately under Senior Grandmaster Ed Parker and helped shape the final revisions of American Kenpo as we know it today.
