Welcome back to another exciting episode of *The Mind Sensei Podcast.* I'm your host, Peter Tas, and today I am truly honored to be joined by a living legend in the martial arts world—Senior Grand Master Chuck Sullivan.
Mr. Sullivan's journey in Kenpo began in February 1959 when he became a direct student of the founder of American Kenpo, Senior Grandmaster Edmund K. Parker. As the fourth person ever to be promoted to Black Belt by Mr. Parker, Mr. Sullivan has been a cornerstone in the development, preservation, and innovation of the art for over six decades.
Often referred to as the "Elder Statesman of Kenpo," Mr. Sullivan’s profound influence can be felt throughout the entire Kenpo community. His visionary approach led to the creation of the first-ever comprehensive distance learning program for Kenpo in the 1980s, making martial arts education accessible to students all over the world. This groundbreaking achievement was the foundation of what is now the International Karate Connection Association, or IKCA, which has seen over 625 Black Belts and countless other practitioners benefit from his teachings.
Mr. Sullivan is not only a pioneer but a true trailblazer, ensuring that Kenpo remains dynamic, practical, and inclusive for all practitioners. His passion for teaching and his lifelong dedication to the art have left an indelible mark on the martial arts landscape.
Given the richness of Mr. Sullivan’s journey and the countless insights he has to share, we’ve made this a special two-part episode. In this first part, we’ll explore the early stages of his remarkable journey and hear about his time training directly under Mr. Parker. In the second part, we’ll dive deeper into his groundbreaking innovations and the global impact of the IKCA.
So sit back, relax, and prepare to be inspired by one of the most respected figures in Kenpo. It's my absolute pleasure to welcome Senior Grand Master Chuck Sullivan to *The Mind Sensei Podcast.*
In this episode, we dive into:

Welcome to another exciting episode of the Mind Sensei podcast, where we explore the journeys of martial arts legends and dive deep into the philosophies that drive their success.
I’m your host, **Peter Tas**, and today, we have a truly special guest joining us—**Mr. Trevor Sherman** all the way from Los Angeles USA.
This episode is part one of an incredible two-part conversation with a man whose journey through martial arts, psychology, and personal development is nothing short of extraordinary.
Raised on a small farm in Southeastern Idaho, Mr Sherman learned the values of hard work and commitment from an early age.
His dedication extended beyond the fields and into athletics, where he excelled in football and baseball. At just sixteen, he took his first martial arts class—an experience that ignited a lifelong passion.
His academic journey led him to **Utah State University**, where he earned a **bachelor’s degree in psychology. His deep understanding of behavioral psychology, combined with his passion for martial arts, shaped his approach to teaching and mentoring. A fluent Spanish speaker from his mission work in Mexico and Southern California, he carries a unique perspective on communication and discipline.
But what truly sets Mr Sherman apart is his **unwavering commitment to shaping young lives**. He believes that martial arts is the most powerful tool to instill confidence, discipline, and life skills in children. As a dedicated instructor for over 25 years, he stands by the philosophy that “the answer to crime isn’t the electric chair, it’s the high chair.” His influence extends beyond the dojo, leaving a lasting impact on every student he mentors.
Not to mention, Trevor was the **master student of Jeff Speakman**, and an influencer and contributor to incorporating MMA and ground fighting into the Kenpo System. His experience and insights are not only valuable but truly inspiring.
So, **sit back, relax, and join me in welcoming our guest on this captivating episode of The Mind Sensei Podcast.** 🎧🔥
