In 1973, Master Downey embarked on his Kenpo journey at Dublin's iconic Fitzwilliam Street Kenpo Academy, under the mentorship of the late Professor John Conway and later with Professor Maurice Mahon in Baggot Street, Dublin. A fascinating chapter of his life unfolded as he forged a close friendship with the pioneer of Kenpo, Grandmaster Ed Parker, beginning in 1974.
Master Downey's dedication and passion for Kenpo led him to become the principal organizer of Grandmaster Ed Parker's visits to Ireland. After earning his 1st-degree Black Belt in 1981, Master Downey underwent direct training under the supervision of Grandmaster Ed Parker, achieving his 2nd-degree Black Belt in 1985 and his 3rd-degree Black Belt in 1988. Recognizing Master Downey's expertise, Grandmaster Parker appointed him as a representative for his association in Ireland.
Not only did Master Downey excel in tournaments in Ireland during the 1970s, clinching first place in the all-Ireland Kenpo Karate Championships, but he also became a regular member of the Irish National Team, representing his country at European and World Championships. His involvement extended to Ed Parker's prestigious Long Beach International Karate Championships, where he both competed and officiated for fifteen years.
With over forty-five years of experience, Master Downey has become one of the world's leading authorities in the Advanced Kenpo Karate System. His international reputation for teaching excellence and proficiency in Kenpo Self Defense is unparalleled.
Master Downey's influence reaches across borders, as he has instructed Kenpo in numerous countries, uniting Kenpo students in Europe under the European Kenpo Karate Association (EKKA). He is the international director of the Advanced Kenpo Training System (AKTS) and collaborates closely with Master John Sepulveda to promote the association.
