With an incredible martial arts journey spanning over 50 years, Grand Master Rebelo has not just mastered, but excelled in 24 different martial arts disciplines, ranging from Chinese, Okinawan, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, to American martial arts. He holds the title of 10th Degree Black Belt (Judan) in various styles, including Kempo, Nindo Kobujutsu, Shao Choy Hung Kung Fu, and Ed Parker's American Kenpo Karate.
A walking encyclopedia of martial arts, Grand Master Rebelo is not only a seasoned instructor but also a martial arts historian, often sought after for his wealth of knowledge. His contributions have earned him recognition in the form of inductions into five Halls of Fame as a historian.
As the Senior Instructor of Rebelo's Kenpo Karate, Grand Master Rebelo has dedicated 44 years to teaching, leaving an indelible mark on the Southeastern Massachusetts area. He has been a self-defense instructor for the New Bedford Auxiliary Police and the New Bedford Chapter of the Guardian Angels, emphasizing the practicality of martial arts in everyday life.

Biography:
Joseph P. Rebelo II has been involved in the martial arts for over 55 years with instructor, master and even grandmaster ranks in over 24 martial arts from chinese, okinawan, japanese, korean, filipino & american martial arts! He is a martial arts historian and has been called “A walking encyclopedia of martial arts”!
As a teacher for 44 years, let him guide you through your journey into the wonderful world of the martial arts!
He is the Senior Instructor of Rebelo's Kenpo Karate (which includes the NINDORYU FUDOSHIN KOBUKAI and the WU TANG DRAGON MASTER KUNG FU ACADEMY - Wu Tang Lung Si Gung Kung Fu Kwoon). He has been involved in and at the Martial Arts for over 55 years.
As an instructor, Mr. Rebelo has taught for almost half a century in the Southeastern Massachusetts area.
He has been the owner/operator of 5 commercial studios. In the past,he has taught countless students at the New Bedford YMCA & YWCA, The North End Youth Agency, The Faunce Corner Racquetball Club, The New Bedford Boys & Girls Club, as well as outreach classes at various locations. He has been a self defense instructor for the New Bedford Auxiliary Police and the New Bedford Chapter of the Guardian Angels. He has instructed civic groups such as the Southeastern business women's group on his "Everyday Gestures that will save your life" lecture for practical self defense. He has taught group and private lessons throughout his tenure, Now focusing on long-distance advanced students as well as local individuals. He is considered by many as a "Walking encyclopedia of Martial arts' '.
As a tournament competitor, Mr. Rebelo was in the top ten for both KRANE (Karate Referees Association of New England) & PKL (Professional Karate League) in 1989. Where he was listed in "Karate Illustrated" magazine and was the first top ten rated competitor performing Mr. Parker's Forms in tournaments in New England. He has also promoted/produced 4 open tournaments in the New Bedford area.
A noted martial arts historian, Mr Rebelo is frequently asked for information on various arts and has been quoted in texts as well as on the internet as a valued resource on martial arts history. He has been inducted into 5 Halls of fame as a historian.
Mr Rebelo has also been featured in Masters Magazine & Grandmasters Martial Arts magazine, as well as the books "Five Faces of Kenpo" by Jeremy Lesniak, Martial Arts Masters & Pioneers", "Action Martial Arts Who's Who", "Martial Arts Extraordinaire Biography Book: 50 years of Martial Arts Excellence" by Jesse Bowen
He has one of the largest martial arts book, magazine and video collections in the United States. He has also been a featured TV announcer for the Ocean State Grand Nationals and the Junior National Karate Championships & co-hosted "Championship Kickboxing" in the Rhode Island area. Later, He created Television programs: "Martial Arts Today TV", "Self Defense & You" and the self titled "Rebelo's Kenpo Karate ''.
Mr. Rebelo is the Master of ceremonies for Alan Goldberg’s Action Martial Arts Mega Weekend for the trade show (with over 100 vendors). He is also the master of ceremonies for the Action Martial Arts Hall of Honor Awards and Banquet. In 1973, Master Downey embarked on his Kenpo journey at Dublin's iconic Fitzwilliam Street Kenpo Academy, under the mentorship of the late Professor John Conway and later with Professor Maurice Mahon in Baggot Street, Dublin. A fascinating chapter of his life unfolded as he forged a close friendship with the pioneer of Kenpo, Grandmaster Ed Parker, beginning in 1974.
Master Downey's dedication and passion for Kenpo led him to become the principal organizer of Grandmaster Ed Parker's visits to Ireland. After earning his 1st-degree Black Belt in 1981, Master Downey underwent direct training under the supervision of Grandmaster Ed Parker, achieving his 2nd-degree Black Belt in 1985 and his 3rd-degree Black Belt in 1988. Recognizing Master Downey's expertise, Grandmaster Parker appointed him as a representative for his association in Ireland.
Not only did Master Downey excel in tournaments in Ireland during the 1970s, clinching first place in the all-Ireland Kenpo Karate Championships, but he also became a regular member of the Irish National Team, representing his country at European and World Championships. His involvement extended to Ed Parker's prestigious Long Beach International Karate Championships, where he both competed and officiated for fifteen years.
With over forty-five years of experience, Master Downey has become one of the world's leading authorities in the Advanced Kenpo Karate System. His international reputation for teaching excellence and proficiency in Kenpo Self Defense is unparalleled.
Master Downey's influence reaches across borders, as he has instructed Kenpo in numerous countries, uniting Kenpo students in Europe under the European Kenpo Karate Association (EKKA). He is the international director of the Advanced Kenpo Training System (AKTS) and collaborates closely with Master John Sepulveda to promote the association.

Biography:
in 1973 Eddie Downey began his Kenpo career in Dublin’s famous Fitzwilliam Street Kenpo Academy under the late Professor John Conway and later with Professor Maurice Mahon in Baggot Street, Dublin. During his Kenpo studies Master Downey became a close personal friend of the late pioneer of Kenpo Grandmaster Ed Parker, having known him since 1974.
Master Downey was the principal organiser of Ed Parker's numerous visits to Ireland and in 1981 after testing for his 1st degree Black Belt Master Downey began training directly under the supervision of Grandmaster Ed Parker. He subsequently achieved his 2nd degree black belt from Grand Master Parker in 1985 and his 3rd degree black belt in 1988. Grandmaster Parker then appointed Master Downey as a representative for his association in Ireland.
During the 1970s Master Downey had a very successful tournament career in Ireland taking first place in the all-Ireland Kenpo Karate Championships. Master Downey was a regular member of the Irish National Team for many years and represented his country at European and World Championships. He also competed and officiated at Ed Parker's Long Beach International Karate Championships for fifteen years. Master Downey is one the world’s leading experts in the Advanced Kenpo Karate System and over the past forty-five years has established an international reputation for his teaching skills and Kenpo Self Defence proficiency.
Master Downey has instructed Kenpo in the following countries: Austria, Australia, Belgium, Chile, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Jersey, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United States. Master Downey has united Kenpo students in Europe under the European Kenpo Karate Association (EKKA) and travels extensively throughout Europe teaching and developing the Kenpo system.
Master Downey is the international director of the Advanced Kenpo Training System (AKTS) and works closely with Master John Sepulveda to promote the association.
